Moss is an indicator that something is wrong with your lawn. Poor drainage and nutrition are the main problems.
Aerating and Scarifying the surface will help keep moss at bay.
Worn patches in your lawn caused by dogs and children playing in higher traffic areas can easily be repaired by reseeding or applying a patch of turf.
Using a high-wearing grass seed would be most effective.
Shady areas are always a problem and usually result in a poor lawn quality, due to a lack of sunlight. This is easily fixed by removing old grass and seeding or turfing with a shade-tolerant grass seed.
Remember never to mow your lawn too short. This will only stresses the lawn and weakens the grass plants allowing moss and weeds to take over.
Also, make sure you've sharpened your mower blades!
Your lawn needs different nutrients in different proportions at different times of the year.
Spring (around March) - when grass begins to grow is best for scarifying
Summer - feeding your lawn is a must
Autumn - Feeding is important for the lawn to develop a strong root system ready for the following spring.
